We recommend knowing the height and length of your caravan and the GCM of your tow tug and caravan. Write it down, keep at hand, stick it on your dash if need be. Why?
HEIGHT
As illustrated in the below pic, there are bridges, tunnels, parking areas that you won't fit under. We know both the height of our Landcruiser (which is too tall for most parking stations in cities) and the height of our van (which is even higher). You will come across situations where you need to make split second decisions about your height, so you need immediate access to this info - either from your brain or a little note stuck on the dash. Tip: Google Maps doesn't know your height and will happily take you on a route with bridges/tunnels you don't fit under.
LENGTH
You will often be asked the length of your van when booking into accommodation. This information helps allocate you an appropriate site and them do site management. The marketing on your van will call it an 18ft, 19ft etc... but you need to measure, towball to back end. Its good to know in metric. If you go on a ferry (eg. the Spirit of Tasmania), you also need to provide them an accurate measurement of your tow rig + caravan. Any errors here may result in you missing the boat! They pack 'em on tight and you book (and pay) per cm!
GCM (GROSS COMBINATION MASS)
This is how much your tow tug + your caravan actually weigh when you are on the road (with your family in your vehicle and your stuff in your caravan). This figure can be obtained from a mobile weighing company, weighbridge etc. You need to always ensure you are under the maximum GCM for your vehicle (else you are considered illegal and any insurance claim will be denied). Your GCM is also relevant to the speed you are allowed to do in some states (eg. In NSW, if your GCM is over 4500, which is most families towing caravans - your maximum legal speed is 100km/h).
Happy & safe travelling!!!
